Tactical graphics in the ArcGIS Maps SDK

The ArcGIS add-on brings the open source library to the ArcGIS Maps SDK for JavaScript. Planners draw, edit and save all 318 FM 1-02.2 and APP-6 control measures in a MapView, with the same gestures and the same files as the OpenLayers and MapLibre renderers.

Each clip was recorded in the Tactical Graphics demo with only the ArcGIS add-on loaded.

Draw and edit

Pick a phase line, click it onto the map, then move it, turn it and reshape it by a grip.

Rotated views

Turn the map all the way round. Labels stay on their lines and flip to stay readable.

Esri's symbology

Show the same plan drawn by Esri's own military symbology, then save it as files ArcGIS Pro opens.

Capabilities

  • All 318 graphics, painted by the same layer as the other engines, so a symbol looks the same everywhere.
  • Draw from the graphic picker, then move, rotate, resize and reshape with the same grips and edit controls.
  • Labels and amplifiers set through the engine, as the demo's properties dialog does, with hostile line work in red as FM 1-02.2 prescribes.
  • Rotated views: drawing and grips land where you click, and line labels turn with the map.
  • Saves plain GeoJSON that OpenLayers, MapLibre and Cesium open, still editable.
  • Exchanges plans with Esri's own military symbology: writes them as features Esri's APP-6(E) or MIL-STD-2525E style draws, into a feature service or as files ArcGIS Pro opens, and reads them back.

Requirements

  • @arcgis/core 5.1 or later, in a Web Mercator MapView, alongside @zaes/tactical-graphics 4.4 or later.
  • For a disconnected network, host the ArcGIS SDK's assets and fonts yourself and point esriConfig at them.
  • For the Esri exchange, Esri's military symbology style, read from ArcGIS Online or from a copy republished in your own ArcGIS Enterprise.

Delivery and licensing

The add-on is delivered as an npm package file that you install next to the open source @zaes/tactical-graphics library. It is commercial software, licensed separately from the MIT library. Evaluation licenses and integration support are available.
